The Dandenong Ranges

Summary: Only an hour’s drive from the city are the magnificent Dandenong Ranges, part of the Great Dividing mountain ranges.
Take a leisurely drive through the towering gum trees and magical ferns. The winding forest roads are occasionally broken by quaint townships such as Sassafras and Olinda where you can take your time browsing through the many wonderful quality art and craft shops.
The Dandenong Ranges are also home to ‘Puffing Billy’. Operating since 1900 this fully restored steam engine is Australia’s oldest surviving and most famous steam train. You will be given the opportunity to relive the romance and charm of the by-gone days of steam as you travel on this historic, narrow gauge railway.
A place of great beauty, William Rickett’s Sanctuary is set amongst a beautiful backdrop of towering eucalypt and ferns. The Sanctuary, with its emotive Aboriginal sculptures, is a must see for any visitor to the Dandenong Ranges.
